HMS EcoTeam Now Recycles Drink Pouches and Chip Bags!
The HMS EcoTeam is now recycling Capri Sun and Honest Kids juice pouches and Frito Lay brand chips bags (Doritos, Cheetos, Lays, Fritos, Smart Food). Students may recycle their empty drink pouches and drink bags every day at lunch. The pouches and bags will be sent to Terracycle, a company that makes them into new products. HMS will receive 2¢ for each item we send to Terracycle. The EcoTeam will use funds raised by this recycling effort to purchase new recess equipment for the school.
If you would like to recycle your empty juice pouches and chip bags from home, send them in a plastic grocery bag to Ms. Robyn Page, G/T Resource Teacher. For more information on Terracycle, visit www.Terracycle.net.
SAFETY
Dear Parents,
This is a reminder that we share our parking lot with the elementary school. Please pay particular attention to their staff directions during the arrival (8:45 am) and dismissal (3:30 pm) of their students.
Also, the entrance from Aladdin Drive and the exit to Martown Road are one-way only.
Thank you for looking out for the safety of all the staff and students.
An important note from our Principal and School Nurse:
Dear Parents,
Hammond Middle is experiencing a significant amount of health room visits by children with flu-like symptoms. Please remember that if your child has a fever of 100º F or greater, a cough, or sore throat, they are not to come to school. Children need to be symptom free, without medication, for 24 hours before returning to school.
All absences need to be reported to the school by 8:30 a.m. You may contact the school using one of the following options: phone: 410-880-5836 When your child returns, please send a note so the absence will be excused.
Homework may be requested on the third consecutive day your child is absent. Please do not contact the teachers directly, but call the main office by 9 a.m. on the third day. Work will be ready for pickup after 3 p.m. that day. Due to the number of students absent for one or two days, it is not practical to request teachers to supply work for absences less than three days.
Our goal is to maintain a healthy environment for all students and staff. Please help us accomplish this by diligently monitoring your child's health during this "germy" season.
Thank you,
Kerry McGowan, Principal Robin Frick, Health Nurse |

Waste Free Wednesday
The HMS EcoTeam is instituting Waste Free Wednesdays, beginning September 30. Classes will compete to see which grade can reduce the amount of trash produced by disposable items. You can help the cause by packing lunches that contain reuseable and recycleable materials. The EcoTeam recommends the following substitutions for disposable items:
· USE REUSEABLE SANDWICH CONTAINERS
· USE REUSEABLE DRINK BOTTLES
· BRING A CLOTH NAPKIN INSTEAD OF A PAPER NAPKIN
· BRING REUSEABLE EATING UTENCILS INSTEAD OF PLASTICS
· BRING LUNCH BOX INSTEAD OF PAPER BAG LUNCH
Thank you for your support! Waste Free Wednesday results will be announced weekly.

Registration for 2009-2010 schol year
Reminder:
Absences, late arrivals and early dismissals all need a note of explanation from the parent. Students should take all notes to Mrs. Goins, Guidance Secretary, immediately upon arriving to school. An early dismissal note will help to ensure that your child is waiting for you when you arrive and eliminates the need to interrupt classes. After a child has been absent, a note is necessary to excuse the absence. If your child is coming to school late, you may either come into the school to sign them in or send a note of explanation. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
In our efforts to improve our status as a Green School...
we will no longer provide a paper copy of the Hammond Headlines. We will send the Hammond Headlines via HCPSSNews (web link) and it will be available on this website.
