6th Grade and New Student Orientation

Mon, 08/15/2022 - 3:00pm

Welcome to the newest HMS Students!!

We are so excited to meet you!! To help students feel a sense of belonging, we will have a brief orientation for 6th grade and newly enrolled students on Thursday, August 25, 2022, from 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Parents/guardians and students will begin the orientation with a brief introduction by the administration in the gym.  Shortly thereafter, 6th-grade students will go to their  Advisory Homeroom, and any newly enrolled 7th and 8th-grade students will go with their School Counselor to learn about HMS, and to receive their lockers and class schedules.   Parents/guardians will remain in the gym for a family orientation to middle school.  Once completed, students will return to the gym to join their families and can head out to the blacktop for a special treat sponsored by the HMS PTA!! This event is only for students new to Hammond Middle School.

During the Advisory time, students will:

  • Learn about the first day of school procedures

  • Meet their teachers

  • Receive an overview of their classes

  • Learn tips for having a successful transition to middle school

  • Practice opening their lockers

  • Take a tour of the school

The Advisory/Homeroom list is linked below.  Please check back on August 26th as there may be minor changes based on enrollment.

Advisory List SY22-23

Things to know about the Orientation Time:

  • The orientation will be informative and we encourage families/students to bring a pencil and notepad in case there are things you do not want to forget.

  • Lockers - Students will receive lockers at orientation.  Sometimes students bring school supplies to leave in their lockers.  Other students bring items to decorate their lockers. We encourage both, as oftentimes this helps students feel settled before the first day of school. Students will be allowed to carry their Chromebooks in their backpacks to class again this school year.

  •  Advisory/Homeroom Classroom List Don't worry!  These lists will be posted in the hallways and there are always teachers and staff assisting students in getting to the right place.

  • Want to get involved this year?  The PTA will be available during the orientation to answer questions and sign families up for membership.

  • Unable to attend orientation? Students who are unable to attend the orientation will receive their schedule in their  Advisory/Homeroom on the first day of school.  The orientation PowerPoint will be posted on our website.
